Tuzla is Bosnia and Herzegovina's third-largest city and its salt town: brine springs fed the name and still feed the Pannonica lakes, where you swim in warm mineral water in the middle of the city. The centre is compact and flat, the food is cheap, and the 1995 Kapija massacre memorial sits at its heart. Buses reach it from Sarajevo in about 3 hours; there is no passenger train.

The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Local buses and taxis cover the airport, the bus station and the lakes; agree the taxi fare before you get in.

Watch out

Safety

Tuzla is a calm, walkable city; the practical risks are winter ice, unlit side streets after midnight and taxi fares agreed only at the end. Keep to the centre and the lakes area.
  • Bus timetables posted at the station are often out of date: ask at the ticket counter for the current schedule.
  • There is no passenger rail service to Tuzla; the nearest railhead is Doboj.
  • Do not swim in Lake Modrac: industrial pollution.
  • Pannonica entry is a small cash fee; bring coins.
