Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Benelux ↗Dutch and Belgian police can ask anyone to show identification (in the Netherlands from age 14): carry the original passport or EU ID card — a photocopy is not accepted.
  • Benelux ↗Tap-in fares, Dutch and Belgian domestic tickets and Luxembourg's free transport all stop at the border: buy an international ticket for cross-border legs, or you will be fined on board.
  • Luxembourg ↗Luxembourg is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Luxembourg sources for your passport.
  • Luxembourg ↗Public transport inside Luxembourg is free in second class; cross-border trips and first class still need tickets.
  • Luxembourg ↗Luxembourgish, French and German are official; English is widely understood in the capital.

Echternach is Luxembourg's oldest town, built around a monastery founded in 698, and the northern gateway to the Müllerthal's sandstone gorges. It is small enough to cross on foot in 20 minutes, so the reason to stay is trail access: the abbey basilica, the lake, and the start of the country's best-marked hiking. Most visitors come as a day trip from Luxembourg City on free public transport; one night turns it into a proper hiking base.

Lac d'Echternach and the western edge

Lake, Roman villa and youth hostel; 20–25 min walk from the centre, so you need a bike or bus.

Echternacherbrück (Germany)

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are wet, slippery sandstone on the trails, unlit paths after dark, and midday heat on exposed rock in July and August.
  • Public transport in Luxembourg is free, but you still need a ticket for cross-border buses into Germany.
  • The basilica crypt is free to enter; the abbey museum keeps split morning and afternoon hours and closes at midday.
  • Schiessentümpel waterfall and its bridge get crowded on sunny weekends; go before 10:00.
  • Trail surfaces in the Müllerthal are wet sandstone and roots — grip matters more than speed.
  • Many restaurants close one weekday (often Monday or Tuesday); check before you walk out.
