Fira is the capital of Thira (Santorini) and the island's transport hub: every KTEL bus route meets here, the caldera rim walk to Oia starts here, and it stays open in winter when much of the island shuts. The centre is car-free, steep and crowded when cruise ships are in. Use it as a base and day-trip the beaches and villages.

Getting around

On foot in the centre: many lanes are too narrow for cars and parking is scarce. KTEL Santorini buses link Fira to Oia, Kamari, Perissa, Akrotiri and the airport, mostly hourly, cash on board. Taxis and ATV/quad rentals cover the rest; the cable car or the 588-step donkey trail connect the town to the Old Port.

Watch out

Safety

Fira is a safe, busy tourist town; the real risks are heat, steep unguarded steps, donkey-trail footing and pickpockets in the crowded caldera lanes at sunset.
  • Cruise-ship mornings and evenings pack the caldera lanes; go early or late.
  • The donkey trail is steep, narrow and covered in droppings; ignore anyone demanding a ticket to walk it.
  • Book caldera-view rooms and popular tavernas well ahead for Jun–Sep.
  • Bus tickets are cash only; keep coins.
  • Summer heat and 500+ steps between levels: carry water.
