Baltimore
Give Baltimore 2 nights: Inner Harbor and Fort McHenry one day, Fells Point and Mount Vernon the next. Skip it as a Washington day trip — the good parts need an overnight.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Baltimore is a working seaport, not a museum city: the Inner Harbor holds the aquarium and the ships, Fort McHenry sits across the water, and the best eating and drinking is in Fells Point, Federal Hill and Hampden. It is 40 miles from Washington, DC, so it works as a 2-night stop on the Northeast rail corridor rather than a day trip.

Arrive & move

Getting around
The centre is walkable: Inner Harbor to Fells Point is about 20 min on foot, to Mount Vernon about 25. The Charm City Circulator runs free bus loops through the harbour, Fells Point and Mount Vernon — check current routes and hours, as they have changed. Light rail links the airport, the ballpark and Penn Station; the Metro subway is of little use to visitors. Taxis and rideshares cover the rest; a car is a liability downtown because parking runs about $5/hour near the harbour.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Door to door: About 1–1.5 h
MARC or Amtrak from Penn Station to Washington Union Station
Trains run through the day; book nothing, buy on the day. A full day, not a half.
Annapolis
cautionDoor to door: About 1 h
Car or bus via US-50, about 30 miles
Best with a car; the historic centre and the Naval Academy need most of a day.
Ellicott City
goDoor to door: About 45 min
Car or MARC to nearby stations, then a short ride
Hillside Main Street with shops and food; pairs well with a half-day.
Havre de Grace
cautionDoor to door: About 1 h
Car north on I-95, about 40 miles
Waterfront town at the head of the Chesapeake; car needed.
Eat & sleep
Which area to sleep in
Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Inner Harbor
Walk to the aquarium, the ships and the ballpark; hotel-heavy and the priciest, but the easiest base without a car.
Fells Point
Cobbled waterfront streets, pubs and Little Italy; quieter at night than the harbour and 15–20 min on foot from the aquarium.
Downtown / Mount Vernon (Midtown)
Cheaper rooms, Penn Station access and the Walters Art Museum; a 20–30 min walk or short bus ride to the harbour.
Federal Hill (South Baltimore)
Local bar-and-restaurant strip, 10–15 min walk to the Inner Harbor; good for a second visit.

Watch out
Safety
- Crime is concentrated in specific West and East Baltimore blocks, not the visitor districts. Stay in the harbour, Fells Point, Federal Hill, Mount Vernon or Hampden after dark, and take a rideshare rather than walking through empty blocks.
- Do not walk north or west from the Inner Harbor at night expecting to reach a nice neighbourhood — the transition is abrupt.
- Weekday I-95 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway jam roughly 6–9:30am and 3:30–6:30pm; the MARC train beats the drive.Weekday I-95 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway jam roughly 6–9:30 AMam and 3:30 AM–6:30 AMpm; the MARC train beats the drive.
- Parking near the harbour is about $5/hour; free park-and-ride at suburban light rail and Metro stations is the cheaper play.
