Holywood is a commuter town on the shore of Belfast Lough, five miles northeast of Belfast, pronounced "holly" but named for a 7th-century monastery. Its two headline sights, the Ulster Folk Museum and Ulster Transport Museum, sit at Cultra, two train stops east. The town itself is a long straggly strip along the A2 with a priory ruin, a handful of cafés and pubs, and a coastal path. Most travellers see it as a half-day or full-day trip out of Belfast rather than a base.

Getting around

Trains from Belfast Grand Central run every 20 min and take about 20 min to Holywood, continuing to Cultra (for the museums) and Bangor. Ulsterbus 1 and 2 run hourly Monday–Saturday from Belfast Laganside, about 25 min, but only four services on Sunday. The town is a long straggly strip along the A2, so use the train or bus between the centre and Cultra rather than walking the whole way.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet commuter town and one of the safer places around Belfast; the real risks are weather, uneven ground at the priory ruins and the derelict Martello Tower, which you should not enter.
  • The Martello Tower southeast of the priory is derelict and unsafe: view it from outside only.
  • Sunday bus service is sparse (about four Ulsterbus services); check the train timetable instead.
  • Stormont is only 3 miles south but has no direct public transport: you must go into Belfast and back out.
  • The two Ulster museums do not sell combined tickets: budget for each separately.
