Listvyanka is the closest Lake Baikal shore to Irkutsk and the easiest place to see the lake without a long transfer. The town itself is a 4 km strip of lodgings, museums and a market rather than a sight in its own right; the value is the water, the ice in winter and the trailheads. It is a resort village with resort prices, and it fills up in high summer.

The town runs about 4 km along the Angara and the lake shore and is walkable end to end. Marshrutki from Irkutsk double as local transport; drivers should park earlier along the road where it is free rather than at the crowded lower end, where parking is limited and payable.

Safety
- High-season beds rarely go below 1500 ₽ per person per night; winter is cheaper.
- Pribaikalsky National Park hiking needs a permit: 150 ₽ for Russians, 300 ₽ for other nationalities, from the forest office on Ulitsa Gorkovo. Fines cost more than the permit.
- The lake freezes in early to late January depending on the winter; ice tours only run once it is thick enough.
- Longer boat trips should be booked ahead in summer; one-hour cruises can be bought on the spot.
- Some 'tourist information' points are tour agencies selling their own services; the official office is on Ulitsa Gorkovo 2a.
