Bodega Bay is a small Pacific-coast town of about 1,000 people in Sonoma County, 70 mi north of San Francisco and 20 mi west of Santa Rosa. It has no downtown: buildings sit strung along Highway 1 with no sidewalks, and you need a car for everything. Come for cold-water beaches, the Bodega Head whale-watching loop and seafood shacks, not for strolling a town.

Getting around

You need a car. There is no public transport in town, and Highway 1 here has blind turns that make cycling risky. Mendocino Transit Authority runs a coastal bus route — check its current timetable before relying on it. Parking at Spud Point and Doran Beach fills early on weekends.

Watch out

Safety

Bodega Bay is a low-crime small town; the real risks are the cold ocean, rip currents, fog on Highway 1 and long waits for help on remote beaches. Swim near others, never turn your back on the surf, and tell someone your plan.
  • Coastal fog and wind: daytime highs can run 15–20°F below Santa Rosa, so pack a jacket even in summer.
  • The ocean is cold all twelve months; a wetsuit is needed for any extended time in the water.
  • Highway 1 has no sidewalks and blind curves — drive and walk with care, especially at dusk.
  • Cell coverage is patchy along the coast; download maps before you leave Santa Rosa.
  • Dogs are not allowed at Goat Rock Beach.
