Go only if you are already on a Beagle Channel or fjord ship: there is no road in, no gate and no day-trip trailhead. Treat it as a boat day from Punta Arenas or Ushuaia, not a stop you drive to.

- South America ↗Above 2,500 m (Bogotá, Quito, Cusco, La Paz) keep the first day light; sleep lower where you can (Sacred Valley before Cusco) and descend if headache comes with vomiting or confusion.
- South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
- South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
- Chile ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Chile's National Migration Service or a Chilean consulate; keep the entry slip or digital record you receive.
- Chile ↗Torres del Paine: campsites and refugios on the W and O treks must be booked in advance, and the park requires an entry ticket bought ahead; check the official park (CONAF) channels.
- Chile ↗Chile strictly controls food imports: declare fruit, meat, dairy, seeds and honey on arrival, or throw them away before customs.
- Patagonia, Chile ↗Carry cash: many small towns have no ATM, or ATMs that reject foreign cards.
- Patagonia, Chile ↗Torres del Paine campsites and refugios on the W and O circuits must be booked ahead in high season.
- Patagonia, Chile ↗Southern Patagonia is often reached overland through Argentina; carry your passport for border crossings.

Alberto de Agostini covers the southwest of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, including most of the Cordillera Darwin and its glaciers. It has no road access: you see it from the water, on a Beagle Channel or fjord crossing, or not at all. That single fact decides the page. If you want trails, go to Torres del Paine; if you want ice, fjords and near-empty water, this is the one.

Why go
- Glacier Alley: the Beagle Channel between Gordon Island and Tierra del Fuego, with tidewater glaciers dropping straight into the water.
- The Cordillera Darwin, including Monte Darwin and Monte Sarmiento, seen from sea level because there is no other way to see it.
- Subantarctic wildlife from the deck: dolphins, sea lions, sea otters and seals on the coast.
- Almost no other visitors: the park has no road, no gate and no trail network.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- Day cruises are the most accessible option: you stay on the boat and see the glaciers from the deck.
- Landings involve rubber boats and uneven, wet shore; not suitable for limited mobility.
- Check with the operator about boarding steps, cabin access and whether a landing can be skipped.
Visiting lightly
- Choose operators that keep a clear distance from seals and sea lions and cut engines near wildlife.
- Do not buy or carry anything made from the park's wildlife; there is no legal souvenir trade from it.
- Pack out everything you bring ashore, including organic waste.
- Ask whether the operator follows the Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve guidelines before you book.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Alberto de Agostini National Park?
There is no park entrance fee, because there is no road, gate or ticket office. Your cost is the boat: a Beagle Channel or fjord day cruise runs roughly CLP 90,000–250,000 per person (2026 estimate), and multi-day expedition cruises run from about CLP 1,500,000 upward depending on nights and cabin.
What are the best hikes in Alberto de Agostini National Park?
There are no maintained hiking trails. The park is seen from the water, and any shore time is a short guided landing arranged by your operator. If you want real trails in Chilean Patagonia, use Torres del Paine instead.
When is the best time to visit Alberto de Agostini National Park?
November to March, with January and February giving the longest days and the most sailings. Outside that window most visitor boats stop and the channels are dark, cold and stormy; only supply ships and specialist expeditions run.
How do I get to Alberto de Agostini National Park?
By ship only. Options include day and multi-day cruises from Punta Arenas, catamaran or sailing trips from Ushuaia, and the supply ship toward Puerto Williams where it takes passengers (check). There is no road access.
Can I see the glaciers without a multi-day cruise?
Yes. A full-day Beagle Channel cruise reaches Glacier Alley and its glacier fronts, and some routes enter Agostini Fjord. You will not go deep into the Cordillera Darwin on a day trip.
Do I need a permit?
No park permit. You need a booked ship or tour, and shore landings happen only where the operator holds permission. Carry your passport for any crossing between Chile and Argentina.
