Queanbeyan sits just over the NSW border, about 15 minutes' drive from Canberra and 9 km from Canberra Airport. The town itself has a printing museum, a river walk and a strong pub row; most travellers use it as a bed for Canberra or a stop on the Monaro Highway toward the Snowy Mountains.

Getting around

Canberra's bus network does not reach Queanbeyan. CDC Canberra buses run to Canberra Civic and Woden at least hourly, but the ticketing systems are separate and no transfer fare applies. A car is the practical choice: the town centre is walkable, and Canberra is 15 minutes away. Mountain-bike trails around town make cycling a real option.

Safety

A low-risk country town. The real issues are driving: kangaroos on the Monaro Highway at dusk, and the 15-minute run into Canberra after a night in the pubs.
  • Without a car you are limited: Canberra buses stop at the border and tickets do not transfer.
  • Parliament sitting weeks push Canberra hotel rates up; Queanbeyan fills too, so book ahead.
  • Summer days can pass 35 °C and winter nights drop near 0 °C: check the forecast before packing.
  • Pub kitchens close earlier than the bars: eat before 9PM on weeknights.
