Toluca is the capital of Mexico State, 2,660 m up and about an hour west of Mexico City by the El Insurgente train or the toll highway. It is an industrial, working city rather than a resort: the draw is a compact colonial centre, the Cosmovitral stained-glass garden, a strong regional food scene and the Nevado de Toluca volcano above it. Most travellers see it as a day trip or a single night on the way west.

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable: Portales, the cathedral, Cosmovitral and the main museums sit within about 15 minutes on foot. Taxis are plentiful and cheap for a city this size — a short hop across the centre is around M$30–60 (check). El Insurgente commuter trains link Toluca Centro station with Observatorio in Mexico City; CDMX Mobility Cards work on it. Buses from the Terminal de Toluca run west to Michoacán, south to Ixtapan de la Sal and north to Querétaro.

Watch out

Safety

Toluca is generally calm for a Mexican state capital, and the tourist centre is fine by day. The real risks are altitude on arrival, cold nights, and a handful of peripheral neighbourhoods best avoided even in daylight.
  • At 2,660 (≈ US$150) m, altitude can hit you on day one: slow down, drink water, skip the volcano if you feel bad.
  • Nights are cold year-round and hail can fall in any month — pack a warm layer.
  • Avoid Fridays if you dislike crowds: a large street market blocks several central streets and Mexico City families pass through in the afternoon.
  • Some peripheral neighbourhoods are best avoided even in daylight: El Seminario, La Unión, El Cóporo, Santa Bárbara, La Teresona, Zopilocalco, San Miguel Apinahuizco, Nueva Oxtotitlán, Moderna de la Cruz, Cacalomacán, Capultitlán, Las Margaritas, Las Palomas.
  • Museum hours shift on Mondays and public holidays: check before you cross town.
