Bellingen is a small valley town on the Waterfall Way, 30 minutes inland from Coffs Harbour, with a strong arts-and-markets streak and a river that floods the low bridge after heavy rain. Almost everyone arrives by car. Two nights covers the town, the swimming holes and a Dorrigo National Park day; one night only works if you are passing through to Armidale.

Getting around

Walk in town — it is small and flat. For Dorrigo, the river swimming holes and the coast you need a car; there is no useful local bus network for visitors. The low bridge over the Bellinger River in the centre floods after heavy rain, which can cut the town in two.

Bellingen is a small, low-crime country town; the real risks are wet-season flooding on the low bridge, unmarked river swimming holes and wildlife on the road at dusk.
  • The low bridge across the Bellinger River floods in heavy rain; check road status before driving in the wet season.
  • It rains often, and the wet season makes tracks and river crossings harder — carry a rain jacket year-round.
  • Dorrigo day-trip transport runs only on set days and needs booking; without it you need your own car.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy on parts of the Waterfall Way and in the national park.
