  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Hammock Beach is a half-mile-wide strip of Flagler County coast between the Matanzas River (Intracoastal Waterway) and the Atlantic, on FL-A1A north of Flagler Beach and south of Marineland. It is not a town with a centre: it is a resort and residential strip where you drive to the beach access, the marina and dinner. Two nights covers the beach, the Mala Compra plantation site and Marineland; a third night is for golf or kayaking.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is effectively required. FL-A1A runs north–south along the barrier and Palm Coast Pkwy crosses the Intracoastal to Palm Coast; there is no useful local bus. Distances are short in km but there are no footpaths between the resort, the beach access points and Marineland.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 35 min

Drive FL-A1A north, about 30 min

Historic district, fort and old streets; a full day or an easy half day.

Palm Coast

go

Door to door: About 20 min

Palm Coast Pkwy west over the Intracoastal, about 15 min

Groceries, chain restaurants and the practical errands this strip lacks.

Door to door: About 1.5 h

I-95 north, about 1 h 15 min

Better as a separate base than a day trip from here.

Amelia Island

overnight

Door to door: About 2 h

I-95 north then FL-A1A east, about 1 h 45 min

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep one night.

Jacksonville Beach

caution

Door to door: About 1.5 h

I-95 north then FL-202 east, about 1 h 20 min

More restaurants and surf than here, but a long drive for a beach.

Vilano Beach

go

Door to door: About 45 min

FL-A1A north past St. Augustine, about 40 min

Quiet beach with St. Augustine across the inlet.

Orange Park

skip

Door to door: About 1.5 h

I-95 north then I-295, about 1 h 20 min

A Jacksonville suburb; nothing here that the coast does not do better.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Ocean Crest Drive (resort strip)

The Hammock Beach Resort cluster: oceanfront suites, villas and condos, golf, waterpark. Book direct or via a rental site; rates swing hard by season.

FL-A1A north (Bing's Landing / Malacompra)

Smaller villas and vacation rentals near the beach access points and the plantation site; you need a car for everything.

Palm Coast across the waterway

Chain hotels and grocery stores 10–15 min west over Palm Coast Pkwy; cheaper beds, but you drive to the sand.

Watch out

Safety

Low street crime on this residential strip; the real risks are rip currents, summer heat and hurricanes. Check the Flagler County evacuation zone before you book in season.
  • Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov; the barrier island is an evacuation zone — follow Flagler County orders, not hotel advice.
  • Beach access points have small car parks that fill by mid-morning in season; arrive early or walk in.
  • The Atlantic here has rip currents; swim near a lifeguard, and note that many stretches have none.
  • Washington Oaks Gardens State Park charges $5 per vehicle and asks for correct change.
  • Summer heat and afternoon thunderstorms: plan beach time before about 14:00.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contracts for DAB, JAX, MCO and SFB with field-checked drive times and a late-arrival plan.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: the resort strip, Bing's Landing and Malacompra, Marineland and the River to Sea Preserve, Washington Oaks.
  3. Place pages with verified hours and fees (Mala Compra, Washington Oaks, Marineland, the marina) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Storm and evacuation fixtures so the page can go amber when a system is in the Atlantic.
