  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Newport is the central Oregon coast's biggest town and its most complete stop: a working bayfront, two lighthouses, the state's largest aquarium and a brewery campus, all within about 10 minutes of each other by car. It is a wet, cool, drive-in destination — US-101 runs through it and US-20 ends here — so plan around rain and a car, not around a checklist. Two nights covers it; three if you want a beach day or a day trip.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the bayfront, Nye Beach and South Beach are 5–10 minutes apart and buses are limited. US-101 is the spine; Ocean Dr runs the north coast, Bayfront Dr follows the harbour. Walking works within each district once parked.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Nye Beach

Historic district with cafés and galleries; walk to the sand. Best for a first visit without a car every evening.

Bayfront

On the working harbour: seafood, shops, sea lions. Livelier, noisier, less parking.

South Beach

Across the bridge by the aquarium and Rogue; quiet, car-dependent, good for families.

Agate Beach / North Coast Hwy

Motels and larger hotels along US-101 north; cheapest beds, 5–10 min drive to everything.

Watch out

Safety

Newport is a low-crime small city; the real risks are ocean and road. Cold water, rip currents and sneaker waves kill people on this coast every year — never turn your back on the surf, and watch for cyclists and pedestrians on US-101.
  • Rain and wind most of the year: bring a waterproof shell, not an umbrella.
  • Summer fog can cancel lighthouse and boat views; go in the afternoon if the morning is grey.
  • Rip currents and cold water (about 12–14 °C): watch the surf, don't swim far.
  • Book summer and holiday weekends weeks ahead; coastal rooms sell out.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the headlands and south of town.
