Moncton

Give Moncton 1–2 nights: Magnetic Hill and the tidal bore are the draws, and it is the road and rail hub for southeastern New Brunswick.

Moncton is New Brunswick's largest city and the transport hub of the Maritimes: the Trans-Canada Highway, VIA Rail's Ocean and Maritime Bus all meet here. The city itself is small and flat, easy to walk, and its two headline sights — the Magnetic Hill optical illusion and the Petitcodiac tidal bore — are half-day stops. Most travellers use it as a base for Shediac's beaches, the Tantramar marshes and Fundy National Park.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

Downtown Moncton is flat and walkable; Main Street and the Riverfront Trail cover most of what a visitor needs. Codiac Transpo buses run seven days a week, roughly 7:00–22:00, with a flat cash fare and free transfers. A car is worth it for Magnetic Hill, Shediac and Fundy. Taxis are metered and take cards.

Watch out

Safety

Moncton is a safe city for visitors; the real risks are winter driving, tide timings and swimming advisories at the beaches. Lock your bike downtown and keep to lit streets at night.
  • The tidal bore is a ripple, not a wall of water — check the times board at Tidal Bore Park before you go.
  • Swimming advisories for fecal bacteria at Parlee Beach are posted weekly in summer; check before you swim.
  • Winter driving: snowfalls of 20–30 cm are normal and roads can ice over.
  • Lock your bike downtown; bike lanes are limited outside a few streets.
