Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Nordic countries ↗Decide light or dark before anything else: summer trips (June–August) and aurora trips (September–March in the Arctic) need different countries, clothes and bases.
  • Nordic countries ↗Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and the Faroes sell stronger alcohol only in state shops with short hours; buy before evening and before Sundays and holidays.
  • Sweden ↗Sweden is in the EU and the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border.
  • Sweden ↗Many shops, cafés, buses and even toilets do not accept cash: bring a card that works with PIN and contactless.
  • Sweden ↗The right of public access (allemansrätten) lets you walk and camp for a night on most land; keep away from homes and leave no trace.
  • Sweden ↗Drinks stronger than light beer are sold only at the state Systembolaget shops, which close in the evenings and on Sundays.

Nyköping is Södermanland's county seat on the Baltic, about 100 km south-west of Stockholm and roughly an hour by regional train. It has a near-millennium of history, a 12th-century castle on the river and a compact 1600s grid centre you can cross on foot in 20 minutes. Most travellers pass through because of Stockholm-Skavsta Airport a few kilometres outside town; the town itself earns a day, not a week.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Central Nyköping is walkable: castle, Stora Torget, the river and the shopping street Storgatan all sit within about 1 km. Local buses cover the outer districts and Skavsta; a car helps for Nynäs Castle and the coastal route 219.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Oxelösund

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Local bus from Nyköping bus station, about 20–30 min

Port and steel town with a coastal path; half a day is enough.

Nynäs Castle

caution

Door to door: About 40 min each way

Car or taxi along route 219, about 30 km north

Summer opening only; without a car it is awkward.

Trosa

go

Door to door: About 45–60 min

Bus or car south along the coast, about 35 km

Small wooden-town harbour; pairs well with a Nyköping afternoon.

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

SJ regional train from Nyköping station, about 1 h

Day-trip both ways is easy; book a seat for peak trains.

Old town around Stora Torget

Grid streets, castle and river within a 10-minute walk; best for one night without a car.

Near the bus and rail station

Practical for early trains or the Skavsta bus; 5–10 minutes on foot from the centre.

Skavsta airport area

Only if you have a dawn flight; nothing to do in the evening.

Watch out

Safety

Nyköping is a calm small city; the real risks are icy pavements in winter, dark riverside paths at night and the Skavsta transfer if you miss the last bus. Emergency number 112.
  • Skavsta is a budget airport: late arrivals can leave you with no bus, so check the last departure before you book.
  • Many museums and the tourist office keep shorter hours outside summer; check before you travel.
  • Winter pavements and the riverside path can be icy; the daylight is short in Dec.
