Barcelona

Give Barcelona 3–4 nights: two full days for Gaudí and the old town, one for the beach or Montjuïc. Book Sagrada Família and Park Güell weeks ahead or you lose the day.

Barcelona is Spain's second city and the capital of Catalonia, a Mediterranean port with a Roman core, a 19th-century grid and Gaudí's Sagrada Família as its symbol. Sights sit in five walkable districts, the metro joins them in minutes, and the beach is on the metro map. Three to four nights covers the highlights without rushing; anything less means choosing between Gaudí and the Gothic Quarter.

Rules in force · 9Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Iberia ↗Plan meals on the Iberian clock: Spanish kitchens serve lunch from about 13:30–14:00 and dinner from 20:30–21:00; Portugal eats an hour or so earlier. Early evenings are for tapas or petiscos, not full meals.
  • Iberia ↗Inland Spain and Portugal (Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, the Alentejo) pass 40 °C in heatwaves from late June to August: sightsee before 11:00 and after 18:00, and keep July–August for the coasts and the green north.
  • Iberia ↗Andorra and Gibraltar have their own border and customs rules and are reached only through Spain (or France for Andorra); read their pages before adding them, especially if you hold a limited Schengen visa.
  • Spain ↗Spain is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Spain ↗High-speed trains have airport-style baggage screening at the station and boarding gates that close a few minutes before departure: arrive early.
  • Spain ↗Carry your passport or ID: police may ask for it, and hotels must register every guest's document.
  • Spain ↗The Alhambra in Granada and the Sagrada Família in Barcelona sell timed tickets that sell out weeks ahead in season; book on the official sites before you fix your dates.

Getting around

The metro is the workhorse: T-casual (10 rides, one person, €13) or a Hola BCN! travel card for 2–5 days. Most centre trips are 10–20 min door to door. Walk the Gothic Quarter and Born; take the metro between Gaudí sites. Taxis are metered; the airport flat rate applies to BCN.

Go early; the basilica and the mountain paths need most of a day.

Sitges

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Rodalies R2 Sud from Passeig de Gràcia or Sants, about 35–40 min

Beach town with a seafront church and a compact old centre.

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

High-speed train from Sants to Figueres-Vilafant, about 55 min, then a 15-min walk

Book the museum slot with the train; it sells out.

Regional or high-speed train from Sants, about 1 h–1 h 30 min

Roman amphitheatre and aqueduct; a half-day of walking.

Costa Brava coves (Calella de Palafrugell)

caution

Door to door: About 2 h 30 min

Bus from Estació del Nord, about 2 h

Long for a day; better as an overnight in summer.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Eixample

Central grid, metro everywhere, Gaudí buildings on the doorstep; quiet at night. Best first-trip base.

Ciutat Vella (Gothic Quarter, El Born, Raval)

Walk to the cathedral, Picasso Museum and the port; noisy at night and pickpocket-heavy on La Rambla.

Gràcia

Former town with narrow streets, squares and local bars; 10–15 min by metro from the centre.

Sants-Montjuïc

Sants station for trains, Montjuïc museums and Poble Espanyol; functional rather than scenic.

Sant Martí

Beachfront and quieter, near the Fòrum; 20 min by metro to the old town.

Watch out

Safety

Barcelona is a safe city with a serious pickpocket problem: La Rambla, the metro and the beach are the hot spots. Keep bags zipped and in front, never leave a phone on a café table, and ignore the shell-game and bracelet touts.
  • Pickpockets work La Rambla, the metro (especially L3 and Passeig de Gràcia) and the beach; keep phones and wallets zipped and in front.
  • Sagrada Família and Park Güell sell timed tickets only and sell out days ahead in season: book on the official sites.
  • Restaurants on La Rambla and directly facing the Sagrada Família charge tourist prices for average food; walk two streets inland.
  • Beachwear belongs on the beach: cover up for churches, restaurants and shops.
  • August: many local shops and restaurants close for holidays, hotel rates peak and the city is at its hottest and busiest.
  • Metro runs roughly 05:00–midnight (Fri until 02:00, Sat all night); night buses cover the gap.
