Maidstone is the county town of Kent, on the River Medway, about an hour by train from London Victoria. It is a working town rather than a sight-heavy destination: the reason to stop is Leeds Castle, 7 km east, plus a free municipal museum and a compact High Street. Most travellers use it as a one-night base between London and the Kent coast, or skip it for Canterbury.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Maidstone East to the museum is about 10 minutes on foot. Local buses (Arriva and others) cover the suburbs and pay the driver on board; a taxi is often cheaper for groups. Two rail lines serve the town: Maidstone East (London Victoria, Ashford) and Maidstone West/Barracks (Strood, Paddock Wood).

Safety

Maidstone is a normal, safe English county town by day; the usual night-time caution applies around late-night bars in the centre. Watch for traffic on the one-way system and unlit riverside paths after dark.
  • Leeds Castle is 7 km east of town with no direct rail link: budget a taxi or bus each way, or drive.
  • Maidstone has three stations and they are not interchangeable — check which one your train uses before you book a hotel.
  • Maidstone West's ticket office and waiting room open mainly for the morning London rush; platform 1 step-free access needs staff help.
  • Maidstone Barracks has steps to both platforms and no staff.
