SomersetSomerset, Massachusetts

Skip Somerset as a base: it is a car-first suburb of Fall River with no sights. Sleep here only if Fall River hotels are full, and drive in.

Somerset is a small residential town on the west bank of the Taunton River, joined to Fall River by two bridges. It has no museum, no waterfront park and no walkable centre; what it does have is cheaper beds, big diner breakfasts, a century-old market and the Somerset Creamery. Treat it as a bed and a breakfast stop for a Fall River or New Bedford trip, not a destination.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Car only. I-195 exit 10 and US Route 6 are the main ways in and out; MA Route 138 (County Street) runs north to Taunton and MA Route 103 runs west into Rhode Island. SRTA Route 14 is the single bus link, to Swansea and Fall River. The town is flat and residential, so short walks and bike rides work, but shops and restaurants sit along two highways with no continuous pavement.

Watch out

Safety

Low-crime residential town; the real risks are driving on Route 6 and County Street, winter ice on the bridges, and having no way home after dark without a car.
  • Almost nothing is walkable from the motels: plan every meal and errand by car.
  • Route 6 and County Street are fast, multi-lane roads with poor pedestrian crossings.
  • Brayton Point is a former power-station site, not a park: no public access (check).
  • Winter ice on the bridges and river roads; summer traffic to Cape Cod backs up on I-195.
