Give it one night, two if you like old buildings: the plaza and Railroad District walk in 2–3 h, and Montezuma is a 15-min drive north.
Las Vegas, New Mexico is not the Nevada city. It is a small high-desert town on I-25, 60 mi (about 1 h) east of Santa Fe, with over 900 National Register structures, a plaza laid out in 1835 and a railroad district from the Harvey House era. Most travellers see the plaza and the Rough Rider museum in half a day and sleep one night; two nights let you add Montezuma Castle, the hot springs and the wildlife refuge. A car makes the side trips easy; Amtrak's Southwest Chief also stops here.

Getting around
Drive. The town is small and walkable around the plaza and Railroad District, but Montezuma, the hot springs, Storrie Lake and the wildlife refuge are 4–6 mi north or south and need a car. Amtrak's Southwest Chief stops at the station in the Railroad District; the platform has no staff, only a waiting room open at train time and a self-serve ticket kiosk. Limited commuter bus service runs to Santa Fe — check current schedules.
