Portsmouth, New HampshirePortsmouth

Go for 2 nights on foot: Strawbery Banke, Market Square and the harbour fit one full day; add a beach or Kittery day if you have a car.

Portsmouth is a walkable colonial seaport on the Piscataqua river, 2 miles inland from the Atlantic, settled in 1623 and still the third-oldest city in the US. Downtown is small enough to cover on foot in a day; the wider Seacoast region — beaches, forts, the naval shipyard across the river in Maine — needs a car. Most travellers use it as a 2-night base between Boston and Portland.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Downtown is compact and best on foot; the Portsmouth Harbor Trail links the main historic points. COAST runs a free summer–fall trolley and local bus routes to Dover and Rochester. A car helps for beaches, forts and Kittery; I-95 gets congested on summer afternoons.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime, walkable downtown; the main risks are winter ice on brick pavements, summer beach crowds and late-night drinking on the waterfront. Standard US city precautions apply.
  • The bus station is 3 miles from downtown with no signed walking route and no Sunday buses — arrange a taxi.
  • Summer beach traffic and I-95 congestion peak in the early afternoon.
  • Some historic houses and museums close outside May–October: check dates before you go.
  • Sales tax is added at the till; restaurant tipping is expected at 18–22%.
