Franklin, West Virginia

Half a day for the fossil sites and a walk through town; no need to stay overnight unless you're using it as a base for the Germany Valley or Snowshoe.

Franklin is a small town in the Potomac Highlands of West Virginia, known for its Devonian and Silurian fossil sites along US 33 and US 220. Most visitors come for a few hours of fossil collecting or as a pit stop between Elkins and Harrisonburg. The town itself has a handful of shops and diners, but the main draw is the surrounding geology.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.

Watch out

Safety

Franklin is a low-crime rural town. The main risks are road cuts (falling rock, traffic) and icy roads in winter. Cell service is spotty on US 33 west of town.
  • Fossil collecting is legal on road cuts but check land ownership; stay on public right-of-way.
  • Road cuts can be dangerous: wear a hard hat and watch for traffic.
  • No fuel stations after 21:00 in town; fill up in Elkins or Harrisonburg.
