Give Chaves one full day and one night: Roman bridge, castle keep and the spa quarter on foot, then move on. Two nights only if you use it as a Spain border base.
Chaves is a small border city in Trás-os-Montes, 10 km from Spain, built around a Roman bridge and hot springs. The historic centre is compact and walkable in half a day, so most travellers pass through on the way to or from Galicia rather than stay a week. There is no train station: you arrive by bus or car.

Getting around
The centre is flat enough to cover on foot: bridge, castle keep, Praça de Camões and the riverside paths sit within about 15 minutes of each other. Local buses are limited and infrequent; taxis are cheap for short hops. A car is only worth it for the forts, the rural quintas and the Spanish border.
