Kotelnich is a small Vyatka River town on the Trans-Siberian line, 1–1.5 h from Kirov, best known for dinosaur excavations on the riverbank and a two-room paleontology museum. Almost everything sits along or near Sovetskaya Street. Most travellers see it from a train window; those who get off need one night, not two.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Sovetskaya Street runs roughly parallel to the Vyatka bank and holds most sights. Kotelnich-1 station is about 1 km north of the centre; Kotelnich-2 is in the suburbs and barely used. Local buses exist but are infrequent; taxis are the practical fallback.

Safety

A quiet small town; the real risks are winter ice, unlit riverbank paths and cheap drinking spots after dark. Keep to the centre at night.
  • Kotelnich-2 is in the suburbs and served by infrequent local trains only: use Kotelnich-1.
  • The paleontology museum is small and keeps short hours; confirm before you build a day around it.
  • Some fast long-distance trains do not stop at Kotelnich: check the timetable.
  • Store #5 on Sovetskaya is a drinking spot and is not safe in the evening.
