Haast is a scatter of three small settlements — Haast Junction, Haast township and Haast Beach — on State Highway 6 where the road meets the Tasman Sea. There is no public transport, no town centre and little to do after dark. It earns its place as a one-night break on the West Coast drive, or as a lunch and leg-stretch stop if you are pushing through to Fox Glacier or Wanaka.

Getting around

You need a car, a campervan or your thumb: there is no public transport in Haast. Everything — motels, cafés, the visitor centre, walk trailheads — is spread along SH6 and the Haast–Jackson Bay road, so plan on short drives between them. Check fuel availability and opening hours ahead before you leave the glaciers or Wanaka.

Watch out

Safety

Haast is a small, quiet settlement and crime is not the concern. The real risks are the drive — single-lane bridges, weather on the pass, and long gaps between fuel and phone coverage — plus sandflies and cold water.
  • Mobile coverage is limited and mostly close to the township: download offline maps and confirm your accommodation's Wi-Fi before you rely on it.
  • The Haast River Bridge is single-lane with passing bays; southbound traffic has priority. Slow down and read the signs.
  • Sandflies are heavy near the coast and estuaries, especially at dusk: bring repellent.
  • Weather on the Haast Pass and the coast road can close sections at short notice in winter. Check the official road status before driving.
  • There is very little open after about 20:00: eat early or self-cater.
