Petrozavodsk is the capital of Karelia and the practical gateway to Kizhi island, a UNESCO site in Lake Onega. The city itself is a compact grid of 18th-century neoclassical blocks on the lake shore, walkable in half a day. Most travellers come for two nights: one for the city and the lake embankment, one for Kizhi or Kivach. It is a summer destination; the Kizhi hydrofoil season decides whether the trip works at all.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: the railway station to the lake embankment is about a 30-minute walk down Leninsky Prospekt. Buses run frequently on the main routes; a taxi across town is short and cheap. For Kizhi, boats leave from the lake passenger dock at the bottom of the street.

Safety

Petrozavodsk is a quiet regional capital and street crime is low. The real risks are ice in winter, unlit lake-shore paths at night, and the paperwork risk of buying antiques or medals. Read your own government's Russia advice before you book.
