Lexington is the town where the first shots of the American Revolution were fired on 19 April 1775, and almost everything worth seeing sits within a few minutes' walk of the Battle Green. It is a suburb, not a city break: most travellers come out from Boston or Cambridge for half a day, or stop on the way to Concord. Sleep here only if you want a quiet, car-based base for the Minuteman Bikeway and Minute Man National Historical Park.

Getting around
The historic core is walkable: Battle Green, Buckman Tavern, the Old Burying Ground and Massachusetts Avenue restaurants are all within 10–15 min on foot. For anything else you need a car, the Lexpress town bus (weekday daytime, small fare) or the Minuteman Bikeway, which runs from Alewife station through Arlington to Bedford. MBTA buses 62 and 76 connect Lexington Center to Alewife on the Red line.

Safety
- There is no MBTA Commuter Rail station in Lexington; the nearest are Belmont, Waltham, Lincoln, Winchester and Woburn.
- MBTA buses 62 and 76 are infrequent, especially evenings and Sundays: check the timetable before you rely on them.
- Lexpress is a weekday daytime service and does not run on legal holidays.
- Sidewalks away from the centre are patchy and Route 2/128 interchanges are not walkable: do not plan to cross town on foot.
- Patriots' Day (third Monday in April) brings re-enactments and heavy traffic and road closures around the Green.
