Sligo is a small county town of about 21,000 people where the sights that matter sit outside the centre: a 5,000-year-old tomb field at Carrowmore, the flat-topped mountain of Knocknarea, Yeats's grave at Drumcliffe and the table mountain of Benbulbin. The town itself is walkable in half a day. Two nights covers the core; a car turns it into a three- or four-night base for the northwest coast. Without a car you are limited to the S1 and S2 town buses and a handful of rural routes.

Getting around
The centre is small enough to walk. Bus S1 crosses town every 30 min Mon–Sat (hourly Sundays); Bus S2 runs hourly daily along the coast between Rosses Point and Strandhill. Cash fare within town is about €2 adult (Leap Card about €1.50); a little more to the coast villages. For Carrowmore, Knocknarea, Drumcliffe, Glencar and Benbulbin you need a car, bike or taxi — rural buses are few.

Safety
- Do not climb or disturb the cairn on Knocknarea; it is a protected monument.
- Swimming in Sligo Bay is hazardous: strong tides funnel past the islands at the bay mouth.
- Many heritage sites close for the winter (roughly Nov–Mar); check opening dates before you build a day around one.
- Rural buses run a few times a day at best; check the last return before you set out.
- Atlantic weather changes fast: rain gear beats an umbrella on the coast.
