Urunga

Give Urunga one night, two at most: the boardwalk, the lagoon and Hungry Head fill a day, and it works as a quiet stop between Coffs Harbour and Nambucca Heads.

Urunga is a town of about 3,000 where the Kalang and Bellingen rivers meet the sea, 4 km off the Pacific Motorway south of Coffs Harbour. The boardwalk over the mangroves is the reason to stop; the town itself is small enough to walk in half an hour. Most travellers use it as one night on a coastal drive, or a half-day break on the Sydney–Brisbane route.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

The town is walkable end to end in about 30 minutes. The boardwalk starts near the centre and runs almost 2 km to the coast and Hungry Head; no facilities along it, so carry water. A car is needed for Hungry Head's southern, patrolled end, the honey shop and Coffs Harbour.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 30 min

Drive west on Waterfall Way (B78), about 20 min

Small river town with cafés and markets; pairs well with a Waterfall Way drive.

Door to door: About 35 min

Drive south on the Pacific Motorway (M1), about 25 min

Breakwall art walk and estuary views; easy half-day.

Door to door: About 30 min

Drive north on the Pacific Motorway (M1), about 20 min

Bigger town for supplies, the jetty and the marina; use it for anything Urunga lacks.

Waterfall Way (B78) to Dorrigo

go

Door to door: 1–1.5 h

Drive west from Urunga through Bellingen, about 1 h to Dorrigo

Rainforest and waterfall stops; a full day if you keep going to Armidale.

Door to door: About 2 h

Drive south on the Pacific Motorway (M1), about 1 h 45 min

Doable as a long day, but better as the next stop on a coastal drive.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Town centre (Morgo St and Bonville St)

Walk to the boardwalk start, the pub and the one restaurant; the pick if you have no car.

Giinagay Way (the highway strip)

Motels and the honey shop; cheaper, but a 15–20 min walk from the water.

Atherton Drive and the riverside

Holiday-park cabins and family units near the lagoon; best with kids or a car.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are water and weather. Check tides before the boardwalk's outer sections, swim between the flags, and watch for bushfire warnings and road closures on Waterfall Way in summer.
  • Urunga Station is a request stop: trains only stop if you have a booking, so book before you travel.
  • The boardwalk has no toilets or water along its length; the last facilities are at the town end.
  • Mangrove flats flood at high tide and the sand goes under: check tide times before walking the outer sections.
  • Swim between the flags at the patrolled end of Hungry Head; the northern end via the boardwalk is unpatrolled.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy on the boardwalk and at Hungry Head's north end.
