  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Frankfort is Kentucky's capital, a town of about 25,000 in the Kentucky River valley, 40 km from Lexington and 80 km from Louisville. The historic core sits below the interstate and is easy to miss. Come for the state buildings, one bourbon distillery tour and the river overlook, then move on.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights sit in the valley and on both rims, and the distillery is a short drive out. Frankfort Public Transit runs limited routes; taxis and rideshare are thin, so book returns in advance. Downtown itself is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end.

Watch out

Safety

Low-risk small city. Main issues are driving the valley roads after dark, thin late-night transport, and summer heat; downtown is quiet and fine on foot in daylight.
  • No Amtrak service; intercity buses are limited and some need a phone reservation at least 24 h ahead.
  • Distillery tours are free but capacity-limited: reserve online and arrive early; no booking, no tour.
  • Old Governor's Mansion visits are by appointment only.
  • Summer afternoons are hot and humid; the valley holds the heat.
  • Some state-building interiors close on weekends and state holidays: check before you drive out.
