Peggy's Cove is a working fishing hamlet of about 35 people on St. Margaret's Bay, 45 km southwest of Halifax, built around a granite point and a lighthouse that is the most photographed in Canada. There is no public transport, one road in and out, and one main sight. It works as a half-day trip from Halifax, best at sunrise or in the shoulder season when the tour buses are gone.

Getting around

On foot only inside the village: the walk from the visitor centre car park to the lighthouse is about 5 minutes, with no sidewalk, so watch for cars. Hwy 333 is the only road in and out; a car, taxi or organised bus tour from Halifax is the only way to arrive.

Watch out

Safety

The village is safe; the coastline is not. People have died on the wet black rocks and at the cliff edge, and there is no lifeguard or barrier on most of the point.
  • Stay off the black rocks: wet, slippery granite at the waterline has killed visitors. Signs warn that injury and death have rewarded careless sight-seers here.
  • Keep well back from the cliff edge; rogue waves can knock people off the rocks and into the sea.
  • Most of the village is private property: do not park in driveways or walk onto private wharves.
  • Cell signal is patchy when the village is busy.
  • No public transport: without a car or a booked tour you cannot get here.
