Värnamo is a small Småland town on the river Lagan, second city of Jönköping County with about 18,000 people. The town itself is a couple of streets and a square; the reason to get off the train is the bog at Store Mosse, the Old West park at High Chaparral and a steam railway. Base here for one night, not for a week.

Central Värnamo is walkable in 20 minutes end to end; the local bus network is effectively one line, so plan on foot, bike or taxi. For Store Mosse, High Chaparral and Ohsabanan you need a car or a taxi (Västbo Taxi, based by the station).

Safety

Värnamo is a low-crime small town; the real risks are winter ice on pavements, unlit forest trails at dusk and thin rural transport after the last bus.
  • Store Mosse car parks fill before noon in summer; arrive early or you will be turned away.
  • The boardwalk over the bog is narrow — wear shoes you can walk in, not sandals.
  • High Chaparral and Ohsabanan run seasonal opening only; check dates before booking travel around them.
  • Rural bus services are thin on Sundays and in winter; a missed last bus means an expensive taxi.
