Tarija sits at 1,800–2,000 m in a semi-arid valley, so it is warmer and easier on the body than the Altiplano. The centre is small and walkable, the wine and singani cellars are the reason to come, and buses from Potosí or Villazón take most of a day. Two nights covers the plaza, the viewpoints and one valley winery; three if you add a trek or a reserve.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: plaza, market, Casa Dorada and the museums sit within about 15 minutes on foot. Micros run many lines inside the city for Bs 1.50; short taxi rides cost about Bs 3.50 per person. Trufis and colectivos to El Valle de la Concepción leave from Calle Corrado between Trigo and Campero, about Bs 10 per person.

Safety

Tarija is calmer than Bolivia's big cities. The real risks are winter cold at night, rain-closed valley roads, unposted bar prices and occasional road blockades that cancel buses.
  • Altitude is low here, but nights in winter (May–Aug) can drop near freezing: bring a warm layer.
  • Summer (Dec–Mar) rain can close valley and reserve roads; ask locally before booking a trek.
  • Some bars and restaurants do not post prices: ask the total before ordering.
  • Road blockades can cancel intercity buses without notice: keep a buffer day before a flight.
