Apizaco is a working commercial town of about 82,000 people in Tlaxcala state, at roughly 2,400 m. It has almost nothing for a sightseer beyond a railway museum, a steam engine monument and a Gothic basilica. Its real value is logistics: it is the closest town with buses and beds to La Malinche, the 4,462 m volcano, and it sits 25 minutes by car from Tlaxcala city and about 1 h 30 min from Puebla. Come for the mountain, sleep one night, move on.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk. Taxis wait near the ATAH bus station and along Blvd. 16 de Septiembre; agree the fare or ask for the meter before you get in. For La Malinche, the colectivo leaves from the stand near the Elektra store on Serdán, three blocks south of 16 de Septiembre and two blocks east of the basilica.

Safety

Apizaco is a normal working town, not a dangerous one, but it is not a tourist zone: use taxis after dark, keep to the centre and take altitude seriously on day one.
  • Altitude: the town sits at about 2,400 (≈ US$130) m. Take the first day easy, drink water, and do not climb La Malinche on arrival day.
  • Cold nights: winter temperatures can drop below 0 °C, and hotel rooms are often unheated.
  • The La Malinche colectivo leaves early (about 08:20) and the last one down is about 17:00. Miss it and you are paying for a taxi.
  • The summit is 4,462 (≈ US$250) m and weather turns fast; snow and ice are possible in winter. Do not go up in trainers if there is snow.
  • Apizaco is a transport and market town, not a resort: keep normal big-town precautions after dark and use taxis rather than walking empty streets at night.
