Cuetzalan is a small colonial highland town in northern Puebla, about 5,500 people, at roughly 1,000 m in fog-prone cloud forest. Two nights covers the town, the Yohualichan ruins and one cave or waterfall trip; three nights if you want the full waterfall trail. It rains often, the streets are steep cobblestone, and the Sunday tianguis is the busiest day. Getting here takes half a day from Puebla or Mexico City, so a day trip is not worth it.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end, but it is steep and cobbled: wear shoes with grip. Taxis cover the caves, waterfalls and Yohualichan; agree the fare before you get in. Combis and colectivos run to nearby villages from the market area.

Watch out

Safety

Cuetzalan is a calm small town and violent crime against visitors is rare; the real risks are wet cobblestones, fog on the mountain road, unguided cave or waterfall trips, and cash shortages. Keep to the centre after dark and take taxis rather than walking the highway.
  • Rain is frequent year-round: bring a rain shell, not an umbrella, for the trails.
  • Cobblestones are slick when wet and there are few pavements in the outer lanes.
  • Cave and waterfall trips need a guide or a booked package; do not enter the cave system alone.
  • ATMs are few and can be empty: bring cash in pesos from Puebla or Mexico City.
  • The Sunday market fills the town: book a bed ahead for Saturday night.
