Bitola is North Macedonia's second city, 2 h 30 min by bus from Skopje and about 1 h 30 min from Ohrid. Its sights run in a single line — bazaar, square, Širok Sokak, city park, Heraclea — so one unhurried day covers the town. Pelister National Park, 30 min away, is the reason to add a second night. It is a café city first and a monument city second, and it is cheap.

Getting around

Walk. The centre is flat and the sights line up north to south: old bazaar, Magnolia Square, Širok Sokak, city park, then Heraclea. Taxis are the fallback for €1–2.50 a hop; city buses are a flat €0.30 and line #1 passes the station and hospital. Pelister needs a taxi, a tour or your own car.

Watch out

Safety

Bitola is a low-risk city; the real issues are uneven pavements, stray dogs on the edge of town and mountain weather on Pelister. Keep to lit streets at night and it is calm.
  • The tourist information office on Sterio Georgiev Street has been closed at times out of season: check before relying on it.
  • Heraclea Lyncestis is 2 km south of the centre with little shade: go at opening, carry water.
  • The train from Skopje takes about 5 h against 2 h 30 min by bus; take the bus unless you want the ride.
  • Cross-border taxis from Florina, Greece, cannot pick up a return fare in North Macedonia: agree the price and the border plan first.
