Campinas is Brazil's research and industry hub, not a tourism city: 2.8 million people, UNICAMP, and the country's 11th-largest GDP. Visitors get a walkable 19th-century coffee-boom downtown, a strong restaurant and bar scene in Cambuí, and fast road access to the cool hill towns of the Mantiqueira range. Most travellers pass through on business or use it as a stop between São Paulo and the interior.

Getting around

No metro or BRT in service yet, so buses are the only public transport; they are frequent but slow and confusing. The prepaid Bilhete Único smartcard gives unlimited transfers within a 2-hour window for one fare and is free at main terminals with ID. Downtown and Sousas are best on foot; a car helps for hill towns and outlying sights. Traffic lights blink yellow after 22:00 and cameras enforce limits by day.

Watch out

Safety

Campinas is a working city, not a resort: violent crime is concentrated in peripheral districts, but bag-snatching and phone theft happen downtown and around bus terminals. Use ride-hailing at night, keep phones out of sight, and treat the centre as daytime-only.
  • Downtown has urban-degradation pockets; keep to lit streets at night and use ride-hailing after dark.
  • Bus routes and stops are hard to read; ask locally or use an app.
  • Some avenues around downtown are one-way; driving back can be tricky.
  • Late-night red lights may be switched off — do not stop, but keep to limits and signals by day.
  • Viracopos is far from the centre; budget the transfer time.
