Vaison-la-Romaine packs three towns into one: a Roman valley floor with two excavated sites and a 1st-century bridge, a medieval hill town on a rock, and a modern market town between them. It is small, walkable and best used as a night's stop between Orange and the Luberon rather than a base for a week. Two nights is the maximum most travellers need.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Roman sites, bridge, cathedral and market all sit within about 15 minutes on foot. The medieval hill town is a steep climb of 10–15 minutes on cobbles, the last stretch unpaved. There is no town bus; a tourist train from the tourist office does a 35-minute motorised loop (2026 estimate: about €5). A car helps for day trips, but park outside the old town.

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real risks are summer heat, the steep unpaved climb to the castle and flash flooding on the Ouvèze after heavy rain.
  • The climb to the castle is steep and the final section is unpaved: wear shoes with grip, not sandals.
  • Both Roman sites close annually in January; check dates before a winter trip.
  • Summer afternoons hit 35°C+ with little shade on the archaeological sites: go at opening or after 16:00.
  • The Ouvèze has flooded badly before (September 1992); avoid riverside parking when heavy rain is forecast.
  • Village restaurants often close one or two days a week and shut kitchens by 21:00: book or eat early.
