Cardston is a town of about 3,600 in the southern Alberta foothills, founded in 1887 by Mormon families from Utah. Its two anchors are the Remington-Alberta Carriage Museum, which holds one of North America's largest carriage collections, and the Cardston Alberta Temple, the church's first temple built outside the United States. It sits at the junction of Highways 2 and 5, about an hour from Lethbridge and 2.5 hours from Calgary, with no bus or train service. Most travellers see it as a stop between Waterton Lakes and Writing-on-Stone rather than a base.

Getting around

You need a car. Cardston has no bus or train service, and the wider area — Waterton, Writing-on-Stone, the border country — is only reachable by road. Highway 2 runs north to Fort Macleod and Calgary, Highway 5 west to Waterton Lakes and east to Lethbridge. Fuel up in town before heading out.

Safety

Cardston is a small, quiet town and personal safety is not the issue. The real risks are winter driving on Highway 2 and 5, long empty stretches to the border, and summer heat and wind on prairie trails: carry water and check road reports.
  • Cardston is a dry community: no alcohol is sold or served in town. The nearest liquor store is about 45 min west on Highway 5 toward Waterton.
  • No buses or trains reach Cardston; without a car you are stuck.
  • Winter brings chinooks and 200+ wind days a year; rural roads ice over and Highway 2 can close in storms (check road reports before driving).
  • The temple is closed to non-members; only the visitor centre at the entrance is open to visitors.
  • Small-town kitchens and museums keep short, seasonal hours: check before you drive out.
