Boyolali
Use Boyolali as a 1-night stop between Solo and Merbabu, not a base: the temples and milk stops are a half-day, the mountain needs the night.
Boyolali is a rural regency on the east flank of Merapi and Merbabu, about 30 km west of Solo. It is known for milk, soto seger and two small 9th-century Hindu temples at Cepogo. Most travellers pass through on the Solo–Semarang toll road or sleep here before a Merbabu climb from Selo. The town itself is a half-day; the mountain and the villages are the reason to stop.

- Merbabu summit hikes start around 1–2 am and need a registered guide and a permit: arrange both before you arrive.
