Puerto Madryn is the gateway town for Península Valdés and the easiest place on earth to see southern right whales from shore. The town itself is a small beach city with a working port, seafood restaurants and a fast-growing population. Most travellers come for two or three nights of wildlife day trips, then move on to Trelew, the Andes or El Calafate.

Getting around
The centre is walkable. City buses and taxis cover the rest; taxis are numerous and often cheaper than a tour if you are two or more people going to one place. Rental cars are available and useful for El Doradillo and Punta Loma. For Península Valdés, book a tour from Puerto Madryn — no tours leave from inside the park.
