Huesca is a small provincial capital of about 52,000 people and the practical gateway to the Aragonese Pyrenees and the pre-Pyrenees. The old town is compact and walkable in half a day; the reason to stop is the Romanesque north, the Somontano wine country and the road and rail links toward Jaca and Canfranc. Most travellers use it for one night, or two if they want a full day at Loarre and Alquézar.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: cathedral, Coso, San Pedro el Viejo and Miguel Servet Park are all within about 20 minutes on foot. City buses cover the outskirts. For Loarre, Alquézar, the Sierra de Guara and the ski valleys you need a car, a tour or a seasonal bus; the train north to Jaca and Canfranc is a scenic line rather than a sightseeing shuttle.

Watch out

Safety

Huesca is a calm, low-crime city; the real risks are summer heat, mountain weather and unguided canyon or river trips. Keep an eye on bags in the Fiesta Mayor crowds.
  • August Fiesta Mayor (9–15 Aug) fills the centre with concerts and heavy drinking: book beds early or avoid those dates.
  • Canyoning and river walks in the Sierra de Guara are dangerous in June because of flash floods; go with a licensed guide.
  • Huesca–Pirineos airport has no scheduled flights: the nearest useful airport is Zaragoza.
  • Many village bars and restaurants outside Huesca close on weekday afternoons and out of season: check before you drive.
