Kirkland sits on the east shore of Lake Washington, across the water from Seattle and about 15 minutes from Bellevue by car. It is a suburb with a genuine downtown: a waterfront park strip, galleries, coffee shops, a brewery row and a rail-trail. Most travellers come for a half-day or use it as a calmer, cheaper bed than downtown Seattle, then drive or bus in. Without a car you can still do the downtown core on foot and reach Seattle by bus, but the parks and shopping clusters north of town need wheels or a longer bus ride.

Getting around

Downtown Kirkland is small and walkable: Marina Park, the waterfront, galleries and most restaurants sit within about 15 minutes on foot. King County Metro buses run from Kirkland Transit Center (3rd St at Central Way) to downtown Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond and Woodinville; Sound Transit express routes serve Totem Lake Freeway Station on I-405. Fares are per ride with a timed transfer window. For parks, Totem Lake and anything off the lake, a car or rideshare is much faster than the bus.

Watch out

Safety

Kirkland is a low-crime, well-lit suburb and feels safe on foot downtown in the evening. The real risks are traffic (I-405 and SR-520 at rush hour), wet winter roads, and leaving anything visible in a parked car near trailheads and waterfront lots.
  • SR-520 across the Evergreen Point floating bridge and the I-405 express lanes are tolled, with no booths: a camera bills the registered owner unless you have a Good To Go pass.
  • Rush hour on I-405 and SR-520 can turn a 15-minute hop into 45–60 minutes. Plan around 7–9am and 3–7pm.
  • Summer weekends fill the downtown waterfront parking; arrive before 10am or park and walk.
  • Winter is wet and dark by 4:30pm; many waterfront activities are seasonal.
