Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • Ireland ↗Ireland is in the EU but not in the Schengen area; it sets its own entry rules and a Schengen visa is not valid for Ireland. Check Irish immigration for your passport.
  • Ireland ↗Ireland and the UK form the Common Travel Area, with no routine checks on the land border. Visitors who are not Irish or British must still meet UK rules (including the UK ETA where it applies) to enter Northern Ireland.
  • Ireland ↗Driving is on the left; rural roads are narrow with hedges and few passing places.

Rosses Point is a small Atlantic village 8 km west of Sligo, at the mouth of Sligo Bay. It is a beach-and-golf place with a handful of places to eat and sleep, not a sightseeing town: most people come for one or two nights, walk the beaches, play County Sligo, and drive the coast lanes to Drumcliffe. A car makes it easy; without one the S2 bus runs every 30 min from Sligo.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The village is small and walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end. There is no local taxi, so one has to come out from Sligo: book ahead if you need one. Bus S2 links Rosses Point with Sligo bus and railway station, the city centre, the hospital and Ballincar, about 20 min, roughly every 30 min daily, adult fare about €3 (check). A cycleway runs between Sligo and Rosses Point.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 30 min

Bus S2 from the village, about 20 min, or 15 min by car

Rail and long-distance buses; good for a wet afternoon.

Door to door: About 15 min

Car via the narrow coast lanes, about 5 km east

Yeats is buried here; the lanes are very narrow, so go early.

Strandhill

caution

Door to door: About 40 min

Car around the estuary via Sligo, about 30 min

Coney Island can be crossed on the sands at low tide from the Strandhill side, not from here.

Enniscrone

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Car west via Ballina, about 1 h

Long beach and seaweed baths; a half-day trip.

Door to door: About 50 min

Car northeast on the N15, about 40 km

Good as a stop on the way north, not a return day trip.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Village centre

Walk to Austies, Rose Chinese, Harry's Bar and the seafront; best for one night without a car.

Seafront and Driftwood

Rooms above the smokehouse restaurant; sea views, 5 min walk to First Beach.

Greenlands caravan park

Rosses Upper, near First Beach; tents and caravans, open April–September.

Sligo town

Cheaper and more choice; 20 min by S2 bus or 15 min by car.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime village. The real risks are the sea and the roads: cold, strong Atlantic water, no lifeguards outside summer, and single-track lanes with blind bends.
  • No fuel in the village: fill up on the main road through Sligo.
  • The lanes to Drumcliffe are very narrow; drive slowly and expect oncoming traffic.
  • Atlantic beaches here are breezy and exposed to waves; swim only where lifeguards are on duty in summer.
  • Inishmurray landing was declared unsafe in 2018, so boat trips cannot go ashore.
  • Mobile signal is patchy: 4G from Three and Vodafone, weak from Eir, and no 5G outside Sligo town.
