Limerick is Ireland's third city, built where the Shannon meets the tide, with a walled medieval core on King's Island and a Georgian grid south of it. The compact centre is walkable in a day, and Shannon Airport is 25 km west, which makes Limerick a practical first or last stop on a west-coast trip. Most visitors need one night; two if they add Adare, Foynes or the Clare coast.

The centre is small enough to walk: castle to Pery Square is about 15 minutes. City buses (301–306, 313) all pass the centre; cash fare €2.40–2.80 adult, €1.68–1.96 with a TFI Leap Card. Taxis are metered and must accept cards; flagfall €4.40 standard, €5.40 premium (nights, Sundays, holidays).

Watch out

Safety

Limerick is a normal Irish city: the centre is safe by day, and the main annoyances are rain, traffic on the quays and late-night noise around O'Connell Street. Use metered taxis, keep to busy streets after dark, and treat the city's old reputation as history rather than a current warning.
  • Rain is frequent year-round: bring a waterproof shell, not an umbrella.
  • Bus and rail stations are side by side at Colbert; the Dublin Coach M7 stops at Arthur's Quay, not the bus station.
  • Match days at Thomond Park (25,600) and Páirc na nGael (44,000) fill city-centre rooms: book ahead.
  • Some pubs and late bars in the city centre have had a rough reputation historically; stick to lit, busy streets at night and use metered taxis.
