Jolo

Skip unless you have a specific reason (work, research, family) and are comfortable with a security briefing. Most travellers should visit Bongao or Simunul instead.

Jolo is the capital of Sulu province in the Bangsamoro region, a volcanic island with a complex history. The main draw is Bud Dajo, a cinder cone and site of a 1906 battle. Security remains the primary concern; the Philippine government advises caution. For most travellers, the nearby islands of Bongao and Simunul offer a safer and equally cultural experience.

Safety

Jolo has a history of security incidents. Travel only after consulting the latest advisories from the Philippine Department of Tourism and your embassy. Avoid travel after dark and stick to the town centre. The local government and military maintain checkpoints; cooperate and carry ID.
  • Security situation: check travel advisories from your embassy and the Philippine government before booking.
  • Limited tourist infrastructure: few restaurants, no ATMs that reliably accept foreign cards, and basic accommodation.
  • Weather: flights and ferries are frequently cancelled during the rainy season (Jun–Oct).
  • Bud Dajo: the trail may be closed without notice; ask locally before setting out.
