Würzburg is the largest city in Lower Franconia and the northern start of the Romantic Road, 1 h from Frankfurt and 1 h from Nuremberg by ICE. The old town is compact and walkable; the two things that matter are the UNESCO-listed Residenz and the Marienberg fortress above the river. Most travellers see it in a day, or use it as a wine-and-palace stop between Frankfurt and Nuremberg.

Getting around
Walk: Hauptbahnhof to the south end of the Ringpark is about 30 min on flat ground. Five tram lines cross the centre between Hauptbahnhof and Sanderring; a single ride is €2.50 and a day ticket €4.30 (2026 estimate, check current fares). The climb to Marienberg fortress and the Käppele is steep; a seasonal bus (route 9) runs from Easter to mid-October.

- The fortress climb is steep and unshaded: go early or take the seasonal bus.
- Many old-town buildings are post-1945 rebuilds, not originals; the 1945 raid destroyed about 80% of the city.
