Palu is the capital of Central Sulawesi, sitting at the end of a long, narrow bay on the island's west coast. It is a working Indonesian city of around 400,000 people, rebuilt after the September 2018 earthquake, tsunami and liquefaction that destroyed whole districts. Travellers use it as the airport and road hub for Lore Lindu National Park, the Togian Islands via Ampana, and the Donggala coast. The city itself needs a day, maybe two: the bay viewpoints, the state museum, the old royal house at Sou Raja, and a plate of kaledo, the local beef-leg soup. It is not a resort town and there is no real beach scene inside the city.

Getting around

Angkot minibuses run the main roads by day until roughly 22:00 and cost a flat shared fare; routes change with the passengers on board, so tell the driver you want a shared ride, not a charter. Metered taxis are called by phone through your hotel rather than hailed on the street, and a minimum fare applies even if the meter shows less. Ride-hailing apps work in the centre. For Donggala, Lore Lindu or Ampana, hire a car with a driver or take a long-distance bus.

Watch out

Safety

Palu is a normal Indonesian city for petty crime, but it sits in an active earthquake and tsunami zone: learn your hotel's evacuation route on day one, and treat the sea with respect during any tremor.
  • This is an active seismic zone: know the tsunami-evacuation route from your hotel and move inland or uphill if you feel a strong quake.
  • Some coastal ground near the bay is still rebuilding after 2018; check locally before walking out onto damaged waterfront.
  • Angkot drivers may treat a foreigner as a charter; agree the shared fare before boarding or take a taxi.
  • Roads into Lore Lindu and toward Ampana can be slow and rough in the wet season.
  • Cash is king outside malls and chain hotels; ATMs are scarce on the Donggala road.
