Birnam is a small Highland-edge village on the west bank of the Tay, joined to Dunkeld by a bridge built in 1809. It is the last fragment of Shakespeare's Birnam Wood, a base for forest walks above Craigvinean, and a rail stop on the Perth–Inverness line. Most travellers see it in a day; one night lets you walk the Hermitage in the morning light.

Getting around

Walking covers Birnam, Little Dunkeld and Dunkeld; the bridge between them is often busy with traffic. Trains run hourly or so to Perth, Pitlochry and Inverness, and Stagecoach buses link Perth and Aberfeldy. For anywhere else you need a car or a taxi.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet village and one of the safer stops in Scotland. The real risks are traffic on Dunkeld Bridge, uneven and icy forest paths, and short winter daylight.
  • Dunkeld & Birnam station is not step-free: trains both ways use Platform 1, and Platform 2 is reached only by a footbridge.
  • Platforms are low, so the on-train ramp cannot be used; ask staff before boarding if you need help.
  • Some Inverness trains pass through without stopping — change at Perth.
  • Forest tracks above Craigvinean are steep and can be icy from late autumn; light fades early behind the crags.
