  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Cleveland is a small, flat Delta town of about 11,000 people, home to Delta State University and two music stops that matter: Dockery Farms, the plantation widely credited as the birthplace of the Delta blues, and the GRAMMY Museum Mississippi. There is no public transport, so you need a car. Most travellers sleep here one or two nights while working the Blues Highway between Memphis and Greenville, or stop for an afternoon on the way through.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

No public transport. Two local taxi services operate (Cook's Taxi, +1 662-402-4150 — check). The town is flat and about 7 mi / 11 km across, so a bike works in good weather. For Dockery Farms, Rosedale or any Delta loop you need a car.

go

Door to door: About 30 min

US 82 east, about 35 mi / 56 km

BB King Museum and the original Lost Pizza location.

Greenwood

go

Door to door: About 50 min

Watch out

Safety

Cleveland is a small town and generally calm for visitors; the real risks are long drives on dark Delta highways, summer heat and deer or trucks on two-lane roads at night.
  • Distances between Delta towns are long and cell coverage thins out on back roads: fill the tank in Cleveland or Greenville.
  • Summer heat and humidity are severe; carry water if you walk or cycle.
  • Liquor stores close at 10pm and bars stop serving at 1am under Mississippi law.
  • Some Delta heritage sites are unstaffed or have irregular hours: check before driving out.
