Říp is a lone 455 m hill above flat farmland between Central and North Bohemia, the inside of a volcano that last erupted about 50 million years ago. It rises roughly 200 m over the fields around it and is visible from Prague and from far across Bohemia, which is why Czech legend makes it the place where forefather Čech settled his people. The top holds the Romanesque rotunda of St George, one of the oldest standing buildings in the country. It is a small nature reserve, not a big park: expect a short steep climb, a chapel, a pub and a few named viewpoints, not a day of trails.

Accessibility
- The lower fields and village lanes are flat and easy, but the summit path is steep and rocky.
- The rotunda interior has a step at the entrance; the plateau around it is level once you are up.
Visiting lightly
- Take the train to Ctiněves rather than driving; the walk from the platform is part of the visit.
- Carry out everything you bring — there are no bins on the slopes.
- Buy from the summit pub or the Ctiněves brewery so the villages keep a stake in the hill.

How much does it cost to enter Říp?
Nothing. The hill and the nature reserve are free to walk. The only charge is the rotunda of St George, about 30 Kč (2026 estimate), open roughly 10:00–15:00 and closed in winter. Parking at Rovné is paid, and a train ticket from Prague costs about 78 Kč.
What are the best hikes in Říp?
There is really one climb with several starts. The shortest is 2 km from the Rovné car park, about 40–50 minutes up. From Ctiněves railway station it is 2.6 km, the best car-free option from Prague. A longer variant uses Mnetěš station, 3.8 km from the top, so you do not walk the same way twice. All are moderate and steep near the summit.
When is the best time to visit Říp?
April, May, September and October: mild weather, blossom or autumn colour, and few people. July and August are hot on the open lower slope. Avoid 1 January unless you want the crowd — the New Year's Day hike is a Czech tradition and the hill gets busy.
Can I drive or cycle to the top?
No driving: cars are banned on the hill and the road up from Rovné is closed to traffic. On a bike only the paved Rovné road works; the other paths are footpaths between rocks, and riding down anything else is dangerous.
Is the view from the top good?
Partly. Říp was bare in the past but is wooded now, so trees block much of the panorama. Three signed lookouts — Roudnice, Mělník and Prague — give the open views, each facing the town it is named after.
Is there anywhere to eat or sleep on Říp?
Chata Říp on the summit serves meals, snacks and souvenirs and is the only food on the hill; it closes in bad weather. There is no accommodation on the hill. Sleep in Ctiněves, Krabčice or Rovné, or come from Prague as a day trip.
